Jannik Sinner became the Australian Open 2024 champion after defeating Daniil Medvedev 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 and the Italian gave full credit for his victory to his parents.
Sinner claimed his first-ever Grand Slam after a five-set battle against one of the best players in the world, proving his resilience and composure at the biggest stage.
Talking after the match, the 22-year-old thanked his parents for always being there for him and supporting him. The Italian then wished that every parent would their child as much freedom as they did to him.
“Everyone who’s watching from home, especially my family. I wish everyone could have my parents. They always let me choose whatever I wanted to. Even when I was younger, I played some other sports. They never put pressure on me. I wish this freedom is possible for as many young kids as possible. Thank you so much to my parents,” Sinner said after the match.
He then went on to thank his team who didn’t lose patience and stuck with him during all the times.
“My team, everyone who’s in this box. Also watching from home who works with me. We’re trying to get better every day. Even during the tournament, we try to get stronger and understand every situation a little better. I’m so glad to have you there supporting me and understanding me. Sometimes it’s not easy because I’m still a bit young sometimes. It is what it is,” he added.
Sinner became the first Italian since Adriano Panatta in 1976 to win a Slam. The world no. 4 just lost one set on his route to the final, which came against 10-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic in the semi-final.
The 22-year-old now has 10 wins in his last 11 matches against Top 5 opponents.
